Venturefest 2008

MONDAY 30 JUNE Venturefest Village activities

The Venturefest Apprentice

Venturefest Apprentice is a competition for Year 12 science, technology and business studies students. The prize is £1000 and a work placement at Nominet, who operate the registering of all .uk domain names. The competition is an excellent vehicle for introducing students to business concepts, showing them how business works, enabling interaction with real companies and employees and developing key entrepreneurial skills.

On Day 1 the students visit a high tech company based on the Oxford Science Park and later present their findings at Venturefest to a panel of judges. On Day 2 the judging process is at 14.00 in the marquee when the winner will be selected. Prizes will be awarded at Venturefest’s closing Ice Cream Social.

Innovative Cars

Oxford Brookes University showcases its Formula Student racing car. Some of the students who have been involved in its design and build will be on hand to describe the challenges they have overcome to build and race a car which has successfully competed against over 60 international teams.

Formula Student promotes careers and excellence in engineering by challenging university students to design, build, develop, market and compete as a team with a small single seater racing car. It provides the students with a real-life exercise in design and manufacture and the business elements of automotive engineering, and teaches them all about team work under pressure and to tight timescales.

Innovation Awards for Schools

The Innovation Awards for Schools is a competition that is open to all GCSE, AS and A level students in Oxfordshire. It is hoped that the awards have encouraged the students to produce high quality innovative designs. Each successful Design and Technology student was provided with a grant of up to £150 to help them with the build of their prototypes. This year the successful applicants’ designs will be showcased at Venturefest on Monday in the Venturefest Village and the public will have their chance to vote for one student, who will win a cash prize for the most innovative design.

Previously run by Oxford Trust, the competition is being run by Quincom Ltd this year. For more information see www.quincom.co.uk or contact Kate.evans [at] quincom.co.uk
